Re: Appalachia, Powell Valley, and Football
Yes, the fact that postal addresses don't coincide with city/county limits makes it more confusing. It all boils down to whatever locality the residence lies in.
One example:
Radford is an independent city (like Norton) whose school system attendance zone is the city limits. But the Radford post office delivers not only to the entire city of Radford, but to portions of Montgomery, Floyd and Pulaski County. Therefore if you see a Radford address it's possible for it to be in any one of FOUR localities.

Im a fan I couldn't tell you how any school does anything, I happen to be a J.I. Burton fan... and I highly doubt they "do" anything against the rules... I know what im talking about is not against the rules at all not sure what you are thinking I meant.
Re: Appalachia, Powell Valley, and Football
How did this all work with athletes from Pocahantas, after it closed down, going to Tazewell instead of Graham and playing the next year?
Re: Appalachia, Powell Valley, and Football
I know a female softball player who, transfered to JIB a few years ago because she did not like the coach at PV. In order for her to be eligible, her mom had to move to a Norton address inside the boundaries for her to be eligible to play any sport. Most of you all who have followed softball would know who this girl is.
Another case in point. Thomas and Julius Jones at one time, lived across Appy High, and went to P.V. Stripes was correct in stating that once a high school athelete establishes his/her "desired" school, that is where they are eligible. The family later moved to BSG near the park after they had started high school. If they had gone to school just one day at Appy High, the would not have been eligible to play at PV. I think that is one reason the Perry wants to move Appy's 8th graders to PVMS, so they would automatically be eligible for PV and not Norton.
It all boils down to the school board designating which school the affected students will go to.

"If they had gone to school just one day at Appy High, the would not have been eligible to play at PV."
Wrong. They could be eligible anywhere they wanted after sitting 365.
"I think that is one reason the Perry wants to move Appy's 8th graders to PVMS, so they would automatically be eligible for PV and not Norton."
Um... apples and oranges.
a.) 8th grade has nothing to do with it
b.) Norton isn't one of "his" (county) schools. Appy HS kid to Norton is the same as to Letcher... not a school in the Division.

As a former grad of PV, I am honestly extremely happy over consolidation. I am also extremely happy that when the two schools combine together, meaning PV and Appalachia, the school will actually be renamed something different. I truly believe that if the school board wanted to do something to honor the memory of the schools, build a corridor dedicated to the alumni of both PV and Appalachia together. Put both of their state trophys in one case together. Show the kids the unity of what they can be together. Put a Appy football helmet and a PV football helmet side by sidewith a football helmet of the new team and logo and colors right in the middle of them. The kids should be proud to know that they come from a heritage of champions. That unified they can be so much stronger together.
And two....this is all about our kids educational futures. If PV and Appy can come together and graduate some of our countys best and brightest....they will be able to go out and talk to others about how after decades long rivalry.....two schools came together and showed the rest of the county and the state of Virginia how proud they are to be graduates of ----------------- High School. A school that was formed from the proud heritage and tradition of two of Southwest Virginias most well known institutions.
There will be one main problem to it failing if it does. Those people in Wise County who live in their glory days from 50 and 60 years back and even 20 or 3p years back who talk about how good they were back in the day. Guess what? Those days are gone and you can't do anything to change them. Don't tried to weild your past on the future of your county. Its called being a control freak and having a control problem. It means for all of you who are so proud and know you're so much better being separate entities....you are the most scared of all. You are yellow as bright as the sun in one area. You are so proud to be from either PV or Appy....but yet.... you are afraid of change. And you don't want your kids going to school with each other because all they have ever heard you brainwash them and teach them is "you hate Bulldogs"...."you hate Vikings".
If the people of this county can be proud people to be from Wise County for once in their life. Not from a city in the county...but to be from Wise County itself....and promote this coming together of our kids for their education success.....I truly believe you will see true harmony as well on the athletic field or court. With the right attitude things will only get much better for us all.
You have some disciples now...lol..pretty good there "Pioneer"..
Re: Appalachia, Powell Valley, and Football
I am a late comer on this topic but when you take bitter rivals and put them in the same building it usually doesn't work, I hope it does but the first time a PV player gets a spot an Appy player thinks they deserve the parents will get mad and the war of words will heat up. My family went through this in Alabama when the Florence schools consolidated, my nephew went from being all-conference, all-region, and honorable mention All-State in AA football to riding the bench on 5A team. I hope it works. I feel for the kids and for everyone in Wise County who been through this wringer over and over on this tired issue.

I agree. I really don't think Appy/PV football team will be much different from the current football team. 10 years ago I would have guessed the team would be great.
Gate City would probably wallop them now unless GC themselves slacked off.
Basketball? I'd say that would be a pretty good team.

The Appy Valley Bull Vikes? Could catch on.
